In my final semester at university I had the awesome opportunity to work with Cabin Brewing Company and Daughter Creative to develop a new beer for their business. Our project objective was to design a new beer flavour, name, and packaging, as well as merchandise, advertising and events that is inspired by the vibes of Cabin Brewing Company. Our class was separated into groups, and our group created the beer “Thrilla in Vanilla” which is inspired by the iconic 70’s boxing match “Thrilla in Manila”, because we thought this idea had so much opportunity to develop cohesive and interesting imagery that aligned with the vintage vibes at Cabin Brewing. We delegated the tasks, and my part of the project was to design merchandise and advertisements for our beer. We all brainstormed together what was important to represent in our beer, what inspiration we should use, and colour palettes. We each came up with a design for the beer can, but we only developed one idea into our final packaging, which was inspired by boxing shorts, the lines on the boxing ring, sports brands typography, and silk-screen printmaking. The final designs and mockups our group came up with is very cohesive and consistent with the aesthetic we set out to achieve. I learned how to communicate well with a bigger group of people, to have confidence in my voice and ideas, and to keep pushing through a project even on a tight deadline.
